About Me

Every time I eat whole fish I fear for days that I have swallowed a bone. Perhaps my abdomen is absolutely lousy with them, I would have no idea. Thanks for coming and remember to take off your shoes before coming into the living room, I'm quite fond of the carpet.

Facebook is fun! Or, how to have fun with the overly testosteroned.

Dude from Miami insults all of Gainesville. This is how hilarity tends to ensue, ladies and gentlemen.
Apparently, you need to be straight to agree with him. Unfortunately, you also need to be a dickhead. Also, I have fun imagining him grinning as he wrote that last line, thinking that after years of training  he was  finally cleverer than his pet dog.

Thumbs up guy is the man. Knowing Tough Guy Ted (probably not his real name) is a simple man, I start simple. Call him out for using a five-year old Louis C.K. joke and start taking jabs at his sexuality, which to a homophobe I imagine is akin to getting kicked in the nuts by a horse. Fight fire with a kick to the nuts, that's what I always say.
War and Peace is the biggest book he knows the name of. Also, I got him from babbling to threatening  violence in two posts. I wish I could say that was a record.
Thumbs up guy scores again! Love that dude. Also, Tough Guy Ted ought to note that of all the possible ways to spell "butt-hurt" he picked one of the few that's just dumb. Excellent. Also, note that Teddy is awfully keen on his freedom of speech for someone who was just threatening to smack me with a book he'd have to buy just for that purpose.
God, this is just too easy. I'm just going to point out that he, in all serious, used nerd as an insult. This man is old enough to drive a car. I will never get near a road again.
I'm a nerd because he didn't understand my "lingo"? I thought it was my unpopular hobbies and awkward childhood. Well, the more you know I guess. I sincerely wondered if I was being trolled when I read that last sentence and then I remembered: some people are actually this dumb.
Dick move? Yes. Fun? Hell yes. The end? Hell no.
The last jab always lands the nicest.
And just as I was trying to be nicer to people...darn.

Things Facebook thinks I'll like:

You know, lots of people are worried about how much Facebook knows about us. Now, with facial recognition software in the works, it might be able to pick us out of a crowd before we could find ourselves. I do take a good deal of comfort though when I realize: Facebook has no idea what to advertise to me. Maybe this is me-specific, having liked more Facebook pages than I've read in books, maybe not. But boy, they try to sell me some bullshit.

It apparently thinks I have a shaved head, a desire to smell like Dane Cook and compassion for injured soldiers. You couldn't be more wrong if you were trying to put out a grease fire with a garden hose. Better luck next time.

59,000. We're going to need at least that many rounds. Perhaps extras, as I frequently mistake mountains of lard for juggalos, and I can't imagine there being a shortage of those. Confusion-2

You and your friends could experience a UFC fight like a Bud Light VIP, at the Battle on the Bayou in New Orleans! Here We Go.
You know, that sounds like it would be a lot of fun if I didn't have to be a Bud Light VIP. Can I just win the tickets? Please?

You'd think liking just about every beer but Bud Light on Facebook would send them a hint. They remain blissfully hint-free.

Breaking Bad Enter AMC's Breaking Bad Sweepstakes for a Chance to See Incubus Live
Oh hey! It's Breaking Bad! I love that show! What could they be giving away? Breaking Bad merch perhaps? I'll sign up right a-INCUBUS TICKETS?! FFFUUUUU!!!!!!

To celebrate America's birthday, Budweiser is offering you a MP3 of your choice. Like us to get your track now!
Funny that Belgians are celebrating America's birthday. Seems like they're confused, I guess not having a government for a year or so will do that to you. The free song thing would've been cool, in 1996. I actually forgot there was a such thing as paying for music. Anyway, gross beer, and Budweiser STILL has yet to take a hint.

Enjoy breathtaking Miami views and the excitement of Brickell night life. Inifinty Condos offers unmatched amenities and sleek design.
Facebook thinks I'm a millionaire. Now, if I knew less about me, I'd come to the same conclusion, but I expected better from SCIENCE. Also, whoever is behind the name "Infinity Condos" needs to spend a month locked in a broom closet with necrotizing fasciitis.

One more, this is killing me.

Self-Defense

So, I know a lot of people out there charge a lot of money for self defense classes. It makes sense, we live in a dangerous world. While you were reading that last sentence 4,200 people got mugged and at least one person made up a statistic. However, I, being the selfless gent I am will give you the skinny on all things self-defense.

Plan A:
Point shotgun in general direction of attacker(s). Pull trigger(s).
This one's easy. The widespread of the shot should ensure you hit some part of your attacker, and should that fail, you are holding a rather handy ten pound bludgeon. Now, unless you live in the South, are me or are otherwise mentally ill, it is unlikely you'll have a shotgun on you when you need one, which leads us to:

Plan B:
Pull from pocket. Aim at center of mass. Pull trigger until it makes a "click".
While being less accurate, the revolver has the advantage of fitting in your pocket and making you look less crazy and more kick-ass.
Ask yourself: "Am I feeling Lucky?"
As far as calibers, anything smaller than a .38 is for children (and consequently, all children should have a .38). It can also be used as a bludgeon, albeit at much shorter distances. However, for some stupid reason, they don't let you carry one in bars or playgrounds or any place fun really, which leads us to:

Plan C
Swing that shit.
Now, while Florida concealed weapons laws cover knives and separate firearms laws bar them from bars (man, I needed a thesaurus just now), there is no law against walking around a bar with an unconcealed tool.
Or thirty.
Unlike the previous plans, this requires no work on your part. Walk into a bar with thirty machetes and muggers will be the least of your troubles. Now, just in case this somehow fails (though I can't imagine how). There's...

Plan D
Were you expecting anything else?
So, bam! There you have it. You are now an expert in self-defense. Feel free to walk down dark alleys and inner city railroad track all you want.

Disclaimer: Any of these could also be used for fun and/or profit. I should probably warn you against that, but I won't. Enjoy.

One fact about grammar and two about Billy Joel.

So, the bastards in charge of grammar and usage (still not sure who or where they are) have decided that the Oxford Comma should still be the standard. This is despite that it is counter-intuitive, archaic and absolutely worthless. See, I didn't have one in that last sentence and you probably didn't even notice. Since not even readers of this blog are nerdy enough to care about this, I'll move on.

Here's a fact about Billy Joel. In the courtyard (yes, a courtyard) of Billy Joel's Star Island home (yes, he has a Star Island home), he keeps a life-size marble statue of himself playing the piano. That last part is absolutely true.  I have seen it and despite my eyes refusing to acknowledge its presence, bumping into it several times while doing work on his home confirmed for me that it is, in fact, real.

Here's another fact. The verses to "Piano Man" are stupid as shit. I mean, really dumb. Like, plugging your toaster into a potato because of that cute experiment in elementary school dumb. The chorus isn't going to get him into the Royal Academy either, but hey, at least it's catchy. Dissection time!

"It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
the regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin
He say, Son can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes"

First of all, eww. I'm imagining an eighty year old pecker stuffed into a old-fashioned glass. Thanks Billy. Next, drunk people have never talked like that and even if they did, he's still basically pulling a "Hey! Misster Piano Guy! Can youuu play this song I like?! I don'tt know the words or the name or anything, but I did once." Plus, we can only hope that the younger man in question is himself, otherwise, he has a bizarre hobby that really seems like it merits more attention.

"Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be"

Well, he's at a shitty bar filled with weirdos, I bet there are a lot of places he'd rather be. Applying for a decent job comes to mind. Also, what kind of bar doesn't give free drinks to their piano player by default? The wrong kind, that's what.

"He says Bill, I believe this is killing me
As the smile ran away from his face
Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"

Oh, so your a bartender in a big city who thinks they could be a movie star? Join the club buddy. BORING. Also, do they have him chained down or something? It seems John may be being held against his will. File a complete investigation.

"Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talking with Davy who's still in the navy
And probably will be for life"

Does Paul not have a wife because he doesn't have the time or is it because he has a fictitious profession? Occam's razor people. Also, this Davy fella, how is he in the Navy for life? My grandpa was in the navy in WW2 and back then you had to constantly worry about U-boats, Kamikaze squads and malnutrition from your steady diet of Lucky Strikes and dead Axis. So, I could easily see someone's life ending back then. But this song was written in 1973. During the Vietnam war, how dangerous could that have been?
Vietcong navy, circa 1973.
The only risk Davy is facing is if that kook John gets the vermouth mixed with the turpentine again. Also, there has to be a retirement age for the navy right? I'm assuming with people still calling him Davy, he's not ranking all that high, sorry buddy, at 35 you're finding a new line of work.

"And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinking alone"

Practicing politics, uh. Ok. Maybe that meant something back then. I object to the next line, because when people start using stoned to describe getting drunk it makes all sorts of things confusing. Getting stoned means one thing and only one thing, and it's usually not practiced by imbibing liquid (yet). The next two lines are just a plain old lie, getting drunk alone is way better than dealing with anyone who self-identifies as a "businessman" especially after their fourth scotch. By the way, I invented a damn good cocktail, I'm naming it loneliness, listen close.

Loneliness
2 1/2 oz. Scotch Whisky

1/2 oz. Amaretto
1/2 oz. Drambuie
Splash Angostura bitters.

Shake with ice. Serve straight up in an old fashioned glass with a maraschino cherry. Get twisted.

"It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday,
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been coming to see
To forget about life for awhile."

Well, that and the alcohol. You know, they're probably mostly there for the alcohol.

"And the piano sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say "Man, what are you doin' here?"

Get that piano tuned. Immediately. Wiping that mic off can't hurt either, alchy. Also, "they" put bread in his jar? Either that is highly antiquated slang for money or this is one trippy joint. Also, what's up with that last question? "I'm playing the piano, jackass. Now, sit down and have another whatever the hell that psycho back there is mixing."

So, while people have unanimously told me that Billy Joel is a nice, modest man, a modest man does not keep a life-size statue of himself in his courtyard. That is, unless he is complete titty-twisting crazy. I believe I have proved he is. The prosecution rests, your honor.
